Student: Good morning, everyone. Today I will be presenting my research on the effects of social media on adolescent mental health. My study surveyed three hundred students aged fourteen to eighteen across five schools. Professor: Interesting topic. What methodology did you use? Student: I used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. The survey measured self-reported anxiety and depression levels, while the interviews provided deeper insight into individual experiences. Professor: And what were your key findings? Student: The data showed a significant correlation between excessive social media use, defined as more than three hours per day, and increased anxiety levels. However, moderate use showed no negative effects and sometimes positive ones, particularly for maintaining social connections. Professor: How do you account for potential confounding variables? Student: I controlled for factors such as family income, pre-existing mental health conditions, and academic performance. The correlation remained statistically significant even after these adjustments.
