Transcript
Professor: Shakespeare remains the most influential writer in the English language. Today, we will examine the theme of ambition in Macbeth. Student: Why is Macbeth considered a tragedy? Professor: Because the protagonist begins as a noble and respected warrior but is destroyed by his own unchecked ambition. His wife, Lady Macbeth, manipulates him into committing regicide, and from that point, his moral deterioration is irreversible. Student: Is the play still relevant today? Professor: Absolutely. The corrupting nature of power and the psychological toll of guilt are universal themes. We see these patterns repeated in modern politics, corporate scandals, and even popular culture. Student: What role does fate play versus free will? Professor: That is one of the central tensions of the play. The witches prophesy Macbeth's rise, but it is ultimately his choice to act on those prophecies that leads to his downfall.
